7 Reasons People Go Online

Businesses are asking what is social media and is it for my brand, product, service?

Good questions!

And one way to begin answering these queries is by looking at what research has revealed about the motives for people picking up their mouse, using their smart phones for other things besides phone calls or getting an iPad for easy online connection…..

So what are these 7 reasons people go online?

  1. Research
  2. Communication
  3. Self-expression
  4. Purchasing
  5. Entertainment
  6. Education
  7. Financial transactions

And how many of these integrate with social media?

But more important - how many of these reasons touch your business? your products? your services?

And how can you tap into these motives with an integrated social media plan?

What kind of content do you need to put online – on your blog, website, micro-blogging & social networking sites, etc., to attract and satisfy actual and potential clients and customers?

What kind of content is your target audience looking for?

Where do they go online to get that content – whether it be information, helpful tips, recommendations, suggestions, advice about services and products?

How are you going to track your content to make sure it is reaching your target audience and having the hoped-for effect?

The answers to these questions will give you the KEYS to a social media marketing plan that will help you be a winner in this exploding form of communications.

  3. How you break down the primary reasons people go online is quite helpful. It’s good to think about how many of these categories of “searchers” are actually potential readers / prospects / customers….and perhaps target your efforts on those categories. Of course, easier said than done!

  6. Nice summary of the main reasons why people go online.
I like the ability to handle finances, make payments, etc quickly online, plus I probably do 40-50% of my purchasing online. It also allowed me to take the screenwriting program at UCLA without having to relocate to California to attend classes. That was sucha valuable experience for me that I could not have received without the ability to do it online.

Eileen, I am wondering if the list you are giving about the 7 reasons go on line is in that order. I mean, first for research, second for communication,…third self-expression? I wouldn’t have thougth that this one would have come here, but I guess it makes sense with the blogs.
